Developmental & Line Editing

Developmental and Line editing services provide a review of your entire manuscript, detailing strengths and weaknesses and addressing issues related to:

• Structure and style

I’ll offer suggestions related to word choice and readability, and take stock of patterns in sentence length and variety, paragraph flow and transitions, and changes in point of view. I will provide collaborative and supportive editing to help guide you through the process of revising your manuscript. 

Developmental and Line editing services include an annotated review of your entire manuscript and a written assessment listing the main concerns, with extensive feedback, suggestions for revisions, and craft-based examples. After you have reviewed my edits we will schedule a phone consultation to discuss the assessment.

Note: For developmental editing, manuscripts should be sent as a Word document, double-spaced, in a legible 12-pt. font, such as Times New Roman.

Copyediting

Copyediting is the stage that occurs after developmental editing and before proofreading. 

When I copyedit a manuscript I address errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I may also make note of places where the writing is awkward or unclear and offer suggestions on word choice, paragraph flow and transitions, and changes in POV.

While I work primarily with fiction, I am well versed in editing nonfiction containing in-text citations, footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies, including multi-author volumes that either require uniformity of style throughout the text or editing according to the features of each individual chapter. I also have experience with editing theological texts using SBL style guidelines.

I use Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, as the style guide for copyediting. Manuscripts should be sent as a Word document, double-spaced, in a legible 12-pt. font, such as Times New Roman.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final polish of your book before it is published. The ultimate goal of this service is to winnow out any issues that may distract the reader from fully enjoying the content of your book. 

As your proofreader, I will edit with an eye toward catching any errors that may have slipped through previous rounds of editing, such as misspellings, stray typos, subject-verb disagreement, missing words, extra words, and incorrect word breaks or formatting issues that may have arisen during typesetting.

For proofreading services, manuscripts can be sent in Microsoft Word (double spaced, legible 12-pt. font), interactive PDFs, or printed galleys.

Rates

My rates reflect industry standards and the guidelines set by the Editorial Freelancers Association, and fall within the following range:

Developmental / Line Edit: $0.04 per word

Copyedit: $0.03 per word

Proofread: $0.02 per word
